Jubilee pilgrimages in Burundi

Sr. M. Christiane
Burundi

Mutumba

In this Jubilee year, we are very grateful that the Church, through the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, has granted he grace of the plenary indulgence to all who visit our shrines and chapels.

Here in Burundi, we are giving all that we can so that many people may benefit from it.

After the solemn opening of the Jubilee year in Gikungu, Mutumba, and Muyinga, the sisters went out to the outstations of Mutumba parish and neighboring parishes to announce the Jubilee year to the faithful and to invite them to come and draw the graces of the indulgence at our holy places: the Shrine of Trust in Mutumba, the chapel at Mount Schoenstatt in Gikungu, and the house chapel in Muyinga where our Sisters live.

The members of the Schoenstatt Movement celebrate their jubilee with us and especially make use of the gift of the indulgence.

Four sisters form a communications committee, and every third Tuesday of the month, one of them hosts a program on Radio Maria about our community, particularly about our Jubilee.

Pilgrimages to receive the plenary indulgence are underway. Many pilgrims come, and they make use of the spiritual input, of confession, as well as Eucharistic adoration and Holy Mass at these three places.

This year is rich in graces and blessings. Since the beginning of the year, more than 4,000 people have already made pilgrimages—some on foot, others by car. Among these are organized pilgrimages to the Shrine of Trust in Mutumba, both in groups and individually.

For example:

  • Members of the Pilgrim Mother Apostolate on March 8, 2026: more than 1,500 participants, with over 40 buses
  • The Schoenstatt Mothers’ League on February 22, 2026: more than 500 participants
  • The Academic Women’s Branch on March 25, 2026: more than 200 participants
  • Those who work in and around our house in Gikungu
  • The parish community of Bujumbura with approx. 150 pilgrims

Not to mention other groups of pilgrims who come to the chapel of the Center of Trust in Gikungu and to Muyinga.

All return home with immense joy after encountering the Lord in our places of grace.
